Listening to nature calms the mind after a noisy day. Yet not all bird songs have the same effect on our well-being. Biologists finally reveal the wild melodies that most captivate our brains and explain why.
Des chercheurs allemands testent plus de cent espèces sauvages auprès d’auditeurs pour mesurer leurs émotions
The team from the University of Tübingen brought together 84 volunteers in a quiet laboratory. The scientists played the vocalizations of 123 species of wild birds for each participant. In this way, every person rated the heard melody on a precise satisfaction scale.
This unprecedented experiment appears in the scientific journal Frontiers in Bird Science. According to researcher Christoph Randler, listening attentively to animals directly alters our perception of the environment. Moreover, these natural sounds awaken positive emotions and strengthen our attachment to living beings.
Le merle noir domine largement le classement sonore devant le chardonneret élégant et le rouge-gorge familier
The blackbird takes the top spot in the ranking with a rating of 4.52 out of 5. This widespread bird charms walkers in urban parks and forests. Indeed, listeners often compare its expansive vocalizations to a gentle flute tune.
Other familiar species follow closely on the podium steps. The European goldfinch grabs second place with a score of 4.26 out of 5. Next, the European robin collects 4.04 points, while the blue tit reaches 3.92.
At the other end of the spectrum, the barn owl suffers a clear rejection from participants. This nocturnal raptor only achieves the low score of 1.32 out of 5. Yet common in our countryside, its cry sounds too piercing and strange to listeners’ ears.
Une forte complexité acoustique et des fréquences douces expliquent l’attrait spontané du cerveau humain
The researchers analyzed in detail the physical properties of the sounds broadcast during the tests. The public clearly favors soft tones with a narrow frequency band. By contrast, rough or excessively high-pitched cries provoke almost immediate rejection.
The scientific team anticipated strong appeal from simple and repetitive rhythms among listeners. Yet participants favored complex and highly varied sound structures. This melodic richness sustains our attention over time without ever saturating the auditory system.
Cette sensibilité sonore universelle pour la nature offre des solutions concrètes pour repenser nos villes
This acoustic preference does not depend at all on the volunteers’ level of knowledge. Even people indifferent to ornithology named the same winners. Nadine Kalb explains that this auditory pleasure rests on a fundamental biological mechanism shared by all.
The regular listening to animal melodies directly influences our daily serenity. Consequently, harmonious songs reduce accumulated stress over hours of work. City dwellers immediately benefit from these acoustic breaths as they pass through a wooded green space.
Therefore, these scientific results provide a valuable guide for architects. Urban planners can now favor the blackbird’s habitat in public parks. Such greening helps to sustainably ease residents’ daily life in the face of road noise.
