Discover the Intriguing Horned Kamichi, South America’s Winged Unicorn

In the tropical wetlands of South America thrives a peculiar bird: the horned kamichi, renowned for its frontal appendage that has earned it the nickname of the “winged unicorn.”

Anhima cornuta

The range of Anhima cornuta, a close relative of ducks and geese, covers a large portion of northern South America. Measuring 94 centimeters in length with a wingspan of 1.70 meters and weighing about 3 kilograms, this bird is recognizable by its dark plumage speckled with white and, above all, by its “horn,” observed in both males and females.

Pouvant mesurer jusqu’à quinze centimètres de long, cette structure grandit tout au long de la vie du kamichi, mais contrairement à celles des mammifères herbivores, elle est exclusivement constituée de kératine (elle ne comporte pas de noyau osseux). Si cela implique qu’elle puisse repousser lorsqu’elle se brise, elle se révèle trop souple et fragile pour être utilisée à des fins défensives.

On suppose qu’elle servirait à impressionner des partenaires potentiels ou des rivaux et aiderait également les représentants de l’espèce à s’identifier dans les environnements ouverts et marécageux au sein desquels ils évoluent.

Pour déjouer d’éventuels prédateurs, A. cornuta compte plutôt sur les doubles éperons osseux acérés qui ornent les bords antérieurs de ses ailes. Également utilisés pour défendre son territoire ou lors des combats entre mâles, ces structures robustes, mesurant jusqu’à 5 centimètres, peuvent infliger de graves blessures (plaies perforantes, lacérations profondes…).

Vocal Birds

The horned kamichi stands out for its powerful and varied vocalizations, including trumpet-like sounds, honks reminiscent of geese, and a distinctive cry, the “mo-coo-ca.” The latter would serve to signal the presence of a threat to its kin.

A. cornuta also produces a crackling sound as it takes off. This is linked to the presence of numerous air sacs in its bony and cutaneous tissues, whose simultaneous compression generates a characteristic noise.
