6.6 Billion kWh Per Year: China’s Record-Breaking Wind Farm Comes Online

The South China Sea now hosts an offshore wind farm unlike any other, comprised of more than a hundred turbines, a quarter of which are gargantuan in scale.

33 Giants of 18 Megawatts

The Fanshi wind park lies about 80 kilometers from the coast of Guangdong Province, in southern China. Of the 131 turbines installed, 33 boast a colossal 18‑MW capacity.

With a rotor diameter of 292 meters, sweeping an area of roughly 66,000 square meters per rotation, these devices can generate up to 43 kilowatt-hours of electricity per turn, enough to power a typical Chinese household for nine days.

They are not the largest turbines currently in service. Last year, the Dongfang Electric Corporation installed in Shandong (eastern China) a 26‑MW model with blades measuring 153 meters in length. However, the concentration of 18‑MW turbines at the Fanshi park is unique in the world.

According to projections from the China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN), which operates the park, it will produce up to 6.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, fed into a power grid serving the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao metropolitan area. Over the same period, such output should enable CO2 emissions reductions of about 5.1 million tonnes, equivalent to burning 1.92 million tonnes of coal.

Breaking Free from Coal

China remains the world’s largest carbon emitter, with CO2 levels that appear to have risen slightly in 2026. It is also the biggest consumer of coal, burning around 5 billion tonnes that year. Meanwhile, it is making heavy investments in renewable energy.

“The Fanshi offshore wind project marks a new milestone toward our ‘double carbon’ goals, namely reaching a carbon peak by 2030, followed by total carbon neutrality by 2060,” CGN said in a statement.

In addition to solar farms stretching across vast tracts of its terrain, the country also hosts the world’s largest hybrid solar plant, which, with its 260,000 mirrors, is expected to generate more than 2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.
