Chimpanzees Show Vocal Differences Based on Social Group, Similar to Humans

Can a laugh reveal where a chimpanzee grew up? A recent study shows that its cries change with age and eventually bear the acoustic signature of its community. This surprising discovery challenges our view of communication among our closest relatives.

Two separate communities, and voices that eventually no longer sound quite the same

To study this phenomenon, scientists compared 30 juvenile chimpanzees. On one side, thirteen came from Gombe National Park in Tanzania. On the other, seventeen lived at Chimfunshi Sanctuary in Zambia. Thus, the first group lived in the wild, while the second lived in semi-natural conditions.

The work was enormous. In total, the researchers analyzed 11,225 vocal units, including 4,733 laughs, 3,694 groans, and 2,798 moans. Behind this collection of sounds lay a simple question: could one identify the population of a chimpanzee from the acoustic characteristics of its voice?

The answer proved particularly intriguing. Indeed, the vocalizations carried signatures unique to each population. Moreover, these differences became more pronounced in juveniles than in infants. These results are detailed in the scientific journal PLOS One, where the study was published on September 2, 2026.

Here is the detail that changes everything. If vocalizations depended solely on a rigid genetic program, they would remain fairly stable from the early years. Or, the study shows a differentiation that sharpens with age. This result thus points to a progressive influence of the social and ecological environment.

Certain differences do appear very early. Thus, the laughs and groans of the youngest already carry clues tied to their population. By contrast, their moans do not show the same signature. This nuance prevents reducing the phenomenon to a simple innate versus learned dichotomy.

Why would a laugh vary more than a distress call? One lead emerges. The vocalizations used in social interactions could have a greater degree of plasticity. Conversely, sounds essential to survival must remain easily recognizable within each group. This difference could thus explain their distinct trajectories.

Consequently, a young chimpanzee might adjust certain parameters of its voice upon contact with its conspecifics. However, the researchers remain cautious. Their study does not yet allow precise measurement of the share of social learning, ecology, or genetic differences between the two populations.

The discovery matters far beyond chimpanzee specialists. These primates are among our closest evolutionary relatives. Consequently, studying their communication during childhood can illuminate the roots of vocal flexibility that has become so important in humans.

Moreover, other primates also show a certain vocal plasticity. Each observation further blurs the boundary between instinctive cries and learned communication. Thus, a fascinating question remains: to what extent can a chimpanzee modify its voice to resemble members of its community?
