A beach with no visible oil spill may look clean. Yet it is not necessarily alive. In 1967, British authorities attempted to erase an oil pollution with tons of detergent. As a result, several Cornish coastlines became biological deserts for more than a decade.
The Torrey Canyon wreck forces British authorities to improvise a massive chemical response
On March 18, 1967, the tanker Torrey Canyon struck the Seven Stones reef near Land’s End. For twelve days, its cargo spilled in the English Channel. About 119,000 tonnes of Kuwaiti crude oil polluted the English waters.
Faced with the scale of the disaster, authorities acted in a rush. The Royal Navy transported large stocks of chemicals to the wreck site. More than forty additional ships subsequently sprayed detergents over the slicks and the polluted shores.
In total, around 10,000 tonnes of detergent ended up in the sea and on the sand. The goal was to dissolve the oil and quickly rescue the beaches. This well-meant intention would, however, trigger a far more disastrous outcome.
How the chemical remedy intended to save the beaches caused more damage than the oil itself
As early as 1967, Nature warned about the detergents’ effects on intertidal life. Several studies conducted toward the end of the 1960s confirmed these concerns. The dispersant used ultimately caused more damage than the oil on the western Cornwall coast.
The mechanism is simple to understand when reduced to everyday terms. A detergent attacks living tissues, whether it’s a pan or a beach. It therefore never distinguishes the oil from barnacles or fragile algae. ITOPF has confirmed that the toxicity of dispersants caused most of the damage.
Porthleven, the beach where scientists measured a full decade of total biological silence
A network of coastal sites in southwest England was already subject to scientific monitoring. Researchers had been observing barnacle populations there since the 1950s, in relation to climate. This database would later become a valuable reference for measuring the damage.
The monitoring continued for decades, notably at Porthleven. This coastline endured one of the most intense detergent dispersions. The treated estrans took more than ten years to regain a life comparable to untouched areas.
Oil alone would probably have let nature reclaim itself fairly quickly. Yet the detergent froze these beaches in a state of biological desert. This “miracle remedy” thus became the main driver of that lasting sterilization.
After Cornwall’s disaster, a local catastrophe permanently reshaped international maritime law
The toll remained heavy, with about 140 miles of polluted beaches and 15,000 birds killed. The lack of international agreements on compensation pushed states to act. They soon established the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds, or FIPOL.
Facing visible pollution, the temptation is to act quickly and forcefully. But prioritizing the appearance of cleanliness can worsen the real situation. The Cornwall episode reminds us that a miscalibrated dispersant can turn visible pollution into an invisible and enduring disaster.
