On a lovely sunny afternoon, in middle of Silage and Hay season, Headford Mart is holding strong, selling more than 250 cattle to local and national buyers.

In general stock was lighter however, quality held week-on-week rates. Sheep yard growth in numbers is en-par with seasonal trend and secured 80% clearance. Top prices today came from Ballinrobe and went for ewes topping €170 and store lambs reaching €150 and €160. Lighters samples sold for less, varying from €110 - €140. 

Bullock Sample Prices included:  Tuam bred LMX 725Kg €2070.  Corrandulla born AAX 420Kg €1170. A light LMX 390Kg €920. CHX 400Kg €1130.  CHX 535Kg €1480.

COW PRICES INCLUDE:  Best cow per kilo went to a local Headford farmer CHX €1590 610Kg, followed by Cloughanover LMX 630Kg €1490. Best Cow & Calf pair was the tasty Claran-bred CH Cow with LMX calf at foot €1800. A neighbouring farm sold CHX C&C for €1470 making Claran the place to look for nice sucklers this week.

AGED HEIFERS  Heifer numbers were smaller than last couple of weeks with all stock under 500Kg.  Headford bred LMX 410Kg €1100.  CHX 410Kg €1000, CHX 430Kg €1010 from Belclare side. One AAX weighed in at 585Kg and made €1475.

WEANLINGS LMX (Corrandulla) 305Kg €910.  CHX 350Kg €900.  Glencorrib bred LMX 350Kg €870/€2.49Kg.  LMX 470Kg €1260/€2.67Kg.  CHX 358Kg €990/€2.77Kg.

Clearance here was over 90% and buyers still managed to save the hay and secure the stock! - as we write this, fingers are crossed that Galway seniors will follow the minors and finish the day strong for us too! Special thanks to all the local supporters  - and indeed farmers who travelled today - the pressure was on to 'make hay while the sun shone' so we really appreciated the support! A firm favourite was missed on the ringside this week - a local Headford man and avid supporter of Galway - he is following the Galway game under the watchful eye of NUHG staff and will be back soon with a fine tuning ready for the upcoming Early Breeders and Annual Sheep Show & Sale.
