The sale was held in Balla today the 21 st of May with just over 800 lots on offer a
big sale for the time of year. There was a fine trade described as ‘Hot’ and some
quality beef cattle both heifers and bullock did exceedingly well with online
factory and northern buyers pushing things along and all averages nearly reached
the 3:00 p/kg and tops reaching new heights up to 3.60+p/kg. Bullocks 300kg to
400kg were improved and averaged 2.96p/kg. Store bullocks 400kg to 500kg
were slightly up and averaged 2.89 p/kg...While heavier bullocks 500kg +
exceeded the 3p/k and averaged 3.01p/kg with the tops making over the
3.60p/kg. A farmer from Clogher - Claremorris had a CHX bullock weighing 785kg
that made E2,890.00 or 3.22p/kg with the weight and another 725kg char made
E2,490.00 or 3.43p/kg. from a Mayo Abbey – Claremorris farmer.
In the heifers this week there was nearly 300 lots on offer. There was some good
quality store animals that met with a good clearance. Heifers up to 400 kg
averaged 2.90 Euro p/kg. Heifers 400kg to 500kg averaged E2.98p/kg. Heavy
heifers were up and at 3.05p/kg. There was a Char 700kg that made E2,300.00 or
3.29 p/kg sold by a farmer from Partry – Claremorris and another 575kg SIX that
made E1,960.00 or 3.41p/kg sold by a farmer from Garrafrauns – Tuam.
The third ring was in operation for the cows and as usual cow numbers remain
big in the dry cows. Dry cow prices were up due to the presence of some Northern
Ireland and online buyers. A Char dry cow 885kg born Mar ’15 made E2,680.00 or
3.03p/kg from a farmer from Castlehill – Ballina and another LIM 775kg that
made 2,620.00 or 3.38p/kg. and another Lim 775kg born May ’17 that made
E2.620.00 from a farmer from Treenabontry – Swinford. In the springers the best
a 655kg lim cow born May ‘17 with its bull calf at foot that made E1,950.00 or 2.98
p/kg sold by a farmer from Tarmon - Ballina. Bull weanlings 200kg to 350kg
averaged 3.03p/kg. Bull Weanlings 350kg to 450kg made 2.58p/kg. And bull
weanlings 450kg+ made 2.84p/kg. There will be another sale next Saturday the
28 th the ‘End of Month Continental Sale’ with booking as usual on 0818-301-401.
