The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has recently placed two emblematic species from the frozen continent on its endangered species list.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Three Antarctic species see their status change<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The IUCN Red List is the global reference for assessing the extinction risk of animal, fungal and plant species. According to the organization\u2019s latest release, between 2009 and 2018 emperor penguin populations (<em>Aptenodytes forsteri<\/em>) declined by 10%, which amounts to more than 20,000 adults. With the intensification of <strong>climate change<\/strong>, those numbers could drop by half by 2080.<\/p>\n<section class=\"incontent-related\"><span class=\"incontent-related__title\">Read also<\/span> <span class=\"incontent-related__desc\">This discovery about Cretaceous giant cephalopods radically changes our understanding of marine evolution<\/span><\/section>\n<p>\u00ab <em>Satellite imagery shows that the early spring melting of the sea ice already profoundly disrupts Antarctic colonies<\/em> \u00bb, explains Philip Trathan of the British Antarctic Survey. \u00ab <em>Our projections indicate that this phenomenon will disproportionately impact their habitats, breeding sites, foraging areas, and moulting grounds<\/em>. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Another Antarctic species hit hard by climate upheavals and now listed as endangered: the fur seal (<em>Arctocephalus gazella<\/em>), whose numbers have fallen from 2 million adults in 1999 to just 944,000 in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Previously categorized as a <em>minor concern<\/em>, the Southern elephant seals (<em>Mirounga leonina<\/em>) are now considered a <em>vulnerable<\/em> species after avian influenza wiped out more than 90% of newborns in certain colonies.<\/p>\n<section class=\"incontent-related\"><span class=\"incontent-related__title\">Read also<\/span> <span class=\"incontent-related__desc\">Why do deer lose their antlers?<\/span><\/section>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.farmersforum.ie\/trends\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1777325149_861_Emperor-Penguins-Added-to-Endangered-Species-List-as-Climate-Change.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-844926\"  ><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A bleak future for emperor penguins<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As early as 2022, Sharon Robinson of the University of Wollongong and colleagues had determined that emperor penguins were the most threatened Antarctic species and faced extinction by 2100.
