Its operator believes it could continue to operate for more than two more centuries. Between biogas valorization, methane emissions that are not well measured, and recycling on the decline, this massive site embodies the paradoxes of waste management.

Opened in 1993 in the Nevada desert, Apex spans about 890 hectares managed by Republic Services

The site covers nearly 2,200 acres, or roughly 890 hectares of desert terrain. It has been operated since its opening by Republic Services, one of the United States’ leading waste-management companies. In 2022, engineering firm SCS Engineers estimated the daily input at around 9,000 tons of municipal waste.

Lire aussi Sur des dunes livrées aux lapins, Alphonse Daloz a semé une forêt de pins qui a rendu possible Le Touquet-Paris-Plage

This pace remains below the peaks recorded during the housing boom of the 2000s, when the daily average exceeded 15,000 tons. Moreover, the total volume already buried would approach 50 million US tons, according to the Guinness World Records’ estimate. No recent data from the operator, however, allow confirming this total.

According to SCS Engineers, the facility has enough reserves to operate for more than 250 years, until 2275

In a June 2022 press release, SCS Engineers indicated that the landfill could remain in service until 2275. This margin is explained by the sheer extent of available land, divided into successive cells. Then, each new cell requires impermeable barriers and specific drainage.

Thus, SCS Field Services was hired, as a subcontractor to Las Vegas Paving Corporation, to construct the leachate-collection systems for cell MA20. This polluted liquid arises from water percolating through decomposing waste. Its recovery aims to protect soils, surface waters, and groundwater.

Lire aussi Des souches de plusieurs millénaires ressurgissent sur les plages de la Manche, la mer n’a jamais cessé de monter

Since 2012, a 12-megawatt plant converts the landfill’s biogas into electricity for more than 10,000 homes

On May 17, 2012, Republic Services and Energenic inaugurated a plant powered by gas captured through a network of wells. Two turbine-generators burn the methane, turning it into water and carbon dioxide. Moreover, the electricity is sold to NV Energy under a twenty-year contract.

However, capture does not solve everything. In November 2025, a team led by Matthieu Dogniaux published in Nature a satellite survey of 151 waste sites across six continents, capable of detecting plumes exceeding 100 kilograms per hour. The estimates obtained generally show no correlation with the emissions declared or modeled.

Researchers point to open-air dumping zones, while Nevada’s recycling rate declines

Most notably, the detected sources often coincide with uncovered areas, where trucks deposit fresh waste. Managed landfills, however, emit less per unit area than wild dumps. Consequently, traditional accounting methods could underestimate certain emissions.

Lire aussi Nous aurions repoussé la prochaine glaciation de plusieurs centaines de milliers d’années

Meanwhile, recycling makes little progress. According to Nevada’s Environmental Protection Division, the state’s rate fell from 20.32% in 2023 to 17.68% in 2025, far from the regulatory target of 25%. In 2019, Clark County reported 20%. Apex thus guarantees near- limitless landfill capacity, without necessarily encouraging a reduction in the volumes disposed.

[1
2112,2670,2672,2674,2671,2675,2366,2673
post-4130","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-apex","tag-landfill","tag-las","tag-nevada","tag-receive","tag-recycles","tag-trash","tag-vegas","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-50
["GET
