Confronted with droughts that threaten harvests, satellites are now monitoring crops to help conserve water. This promising technology could upend the habits of French farmers, even if it won’t solve all of their challenges.

From Space, Satellites Detect Water-Deficient Fields Before the First Signs of Damage

In a corn patch scorched by heat, everything may seem normal at first. Yet the plants can already be suffering from a lack of water. This phenomenon, known as water stress, can remain invisible for several days. It is precisely at this point that agricultural satellites step in, capable of revealing signs imperceptible from the ground.

Also read 96,7 g de CO2 par kilomètre : les voitures neuves européennes franchissent un nouveau cap en 2025

The European Sentinel-2 satellites observe vegetation through 13 spectral bands, some of which capture information invisible to the human eye. By analyzing the light reflected by leaves, scientists can assess their physiological state. When combined with weather data, these observations help better identify the plots that may experience water shortages.

The European Space Agency (ESA) is studying in particular evapotranspiration, that is, the water transferred into the atmosphere by soils and plants. This measure helps estimate crop needs. The aim is no longer to water an entire farm indiscriminately, but to practice targeted irrigation, adapted to the real conditions of each plot.

In French Fields, Tiny Sensors Are Already Changing the Way Crops Are Irrigated

The revolution isn’t confined to space. Under crops, moisture probes measure the water available in the soil. Some installations also monitor the sap flows of trees and vineyards. This data allows farmers to time irrigation better, rather than acting out of habit alone.

Also read Le Pentagone dévoile une rare image de l’avion spatial top secret chinois

The potential savings are substantial. According to INRAE, replacing sprinkler irrigation with drip irrigation can reduce water use by 20 to 35% in orchards, depending on the circumstances. This technique delivers water directly near the roots. But its installation represents an investment and it does not suit all crops as easily.

Behind the Promises of Connected Agriculture, a Much More Complex French Reality Emerges

A figure illustrates the scale of the challenge: in 2020, only 6.8% of French agricultural land was irrigated, according to public data. Yet these plots concentrate substantial water needs during hot periods. In some regions, every drought episode rekindles tensions among farming, natural habitats, and human consumption.

Maize in particular crystallizes these questions. Historically prevalent in irrigated areas, it raises a delicate issue: should we continue to grow it everywhere under the same conditions? INRAE researchers invite us to rethink farming choices themselves, rather than seeking only more efficient equipment.

Also read Voiture électrique d’occasion : la prime que personne ne réclame, et le test de batterie à 80 % qui décide de tout

Because a technology that saves water does not create new reserves, farmers must also contend with economic constraints. Some potatoes, for example, require regular irrigation to meet industrial size specifications. Thus, water use efficiency also depends on contracts, markets, and dietary habits.

After the Droughts of 2026, the Real Revolution Could Also Be Played Out Beneath Our Feet

The intense droughts of the summer of 2026 highlighted a worrying reality: plant needs increase as water becomes scarcer. In September, INRAE underscored the importance of rethinking farming systems. Satellites can illuminate decisions, but climate adaptation also requires rethinking farming practices.

One surprisingly simple avenue is to improve soils. Trials coordinated by INRAE in the Adour-Garonne basin showed that certain agroecological practices could multiply the water infiltration capacity of soils by two to eight times compared with plowed soils. Preserving their structure thus becomes a genuine tool of resilience against droughts.

Also read Fin de la 2G : ce qui s’arrête de fonctionner chez vous, et ce que personne ne vous a dit de vérifier

The future could also hinge on TRISHNA, a Franco-Indian satellite mission scheduled for launch in 2027. It aims to improve the observation of surface temperature and plant water stress. But one question remains: will it be enough to better observe every drop of water, or will we also need to rethink what the French countryside grows?

[1
2002,2380,1420,1199,2621,1581,1005,1159,484
post-4019","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-droughts","tag-facing","tag-farmers","tag-french","tag-improve","tag-management","tag-satellites","tag-turn","tag-water","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-50
["GET
