Yet beneath the pebbles, oil spilled in 1989 remains. How could hydrocarbons endure for nearly four decades in one of America\u2019s wildest landscapes?<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">That Night in 1989 When a Tanker Veered Off Course and Hit Bligh Reef<\/h2>\n<p>On March 24, 1989, the Exxon Valdez departed the Valdez terminal loaded with crude oil. To circumvent ice, the tanker deviated from its usual route. Shortly after midnight, its hull struck the Bligh Reef. Carried by wind and currents, it reached coves, islands and distant beaches. But counting the victims proved nearly impossible, as many carcasses disappear at sea. On the surface, the coastline gradually regains its colors. Yet, when scientists dig beneath certain pebble beaches, they still find buried oil. A 2015 study located it at eight of the nine sites revisited, with no notable change in its composition since 2001.<\/p>\n<p>These pockets endure thanks to a kind of geological vault. Layers of large pebbles shield fine, poorly oxygenated sediments where waves circulate slowly. As a result, microbes capable of degrading hydrocarbons work at a snail\u2019s pace. The Trustee Council\u2019s scientific program still covers 2022\u20132026 to monitor these residues. Recent findings indicate they are diminishing very slowly and remain little altered. Good news, however: current indicators suggest that this sequestered oil is not today bioavailable to wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>The disaster has also reshaped American regulation. Enacted in 1990, the <strong>Oil Pollution Act<\/strong> strengthened financial accountability after spills and accelerated the retirement of single-hull tankers. American legislation thus drew part of its newer protections from an accident that had brutally exposed the flaws of oil transport.<\/p>\n<p>There remains a less comfortable lesson. Pollution can vanish from sight without truly disappearing from the environment. <strong>Thirty-seven years after the wreck<\/strong>, certain molecules from the Exxon Valdez still lie under Alaska\u2019s pebbles.
