Dutch family sold a flat in Utrecht and bought a cottage and two acres in west Clare for less than half of it

On a wet Tuesday, a Dutch family turned a key in a stone cottage on Ireland’s Atlantic edge.
They had traded a top-floor apartment in Utrecht for old slate, rough fields, and sky.

The arithmetic looked almost unreal: the cottage and two acres cost under half what their city flat fetched.
But the real draw, they say, was space—for noise, for silence, for days that don’t feel rushed.

“We wanted a smaller life that felt bigger,” says Marije, watching clouds sweep over Clare.
Her partner Jorn laughs: “We got wind, rain, and the happiest kids I’ve ever met.”

From canals to the Atlantic edge

In Utrecht, they lived above a bakery, timing sleep to delivery trucks and trams.
They could bike to every café, but they couldn’t find a corner to plant a single tree.

West Clare promised different music: gulls, fiddles, and the long hush between storms.
They found a compact two-bed cottage north of Kilrush, with a stout stone glow.

The agent spoke of “good bones,” which is Irish for draughts and character.
The field gates opened to rough grass, blackthorn, and a view that keeps moving.

Counting the cost, finding the value

They sold the Utrecht flat, paid cash, and kept a cushion for fixes.
A surveyor’s list became their winter script, each item a small victory.

New roof flashing, a modern stove, and attic insulation deep as a duvet

Water treatment, a tightened septic system, and proper land drainage

A heat-pump quote, offset by south-facing glass and heavy-lined curtains

Local property tax, cheaper than Dutch levies, leaving room for rainy-day funds

“What we couldn’t buy in the Netherlands was breathing room,” says Jorn, looking at the hedge.
“Here, cash stretches into seasons, not just another small room.”

Rewiring a life, one room at a time

The cottage needed wiring, sockets that didn’t spark at the sight of a kettle.
A retired neighbor arrived with tools, tea, and a bag of spare switches.

The roof learned to stop dripping, the stove learned to stop smoking.
After three gales, the front door finally closed with a gentle click.

They planted windbreak willows, a row of potatoes, and a rogue patch of kale.
The children named a pair of rooks Duke and Daisy, who inspect the compost like judges.

Work, school, and a slower clock

Jorn codes for a Dutch firm, crouched over fibre-broadband small school, collecting shells and Gaelic phrases.
“Dia dhuit,” they chirp, pockets full of sand, heads full of songs.

Workdays tilt around the weather now, not the Utrecht ringroad.
When the sun pops, they stop, and someone yells “beach,” which means Lahinch by six.

Weather, wind, and why they stay

There are days the wind sounds like a freight train, and the sky keeps emptying.
“We learned good boots, better coats, and the art of drying socks on strings.”

Yet there’s a warmth in winter rooms, music in Miltown Malbay, and endless tea.
On Fridays they trade euros for eggs, bread, and gossip at the market.

Summer stretches like chewing-gum, with evenings that don’t need lights.
Loop Head glows, dolphins arc, and time throws away its watch.

What the move teaches

It isn’t an escape so much as a carefully chosen exchange.
Less list, more land, fewer errands, more errands of the soul.

If you’re tempted, they suggest slow steps and plain questions.
“Visit in the worst weather, then come back and ask your heart again.”

Get a full survey, meet the neighbors, count the miles to services you’ll need.
Check planning, boundaries, and where the winter water actually goes.

Accept that remoteness can feel bracing one day, heavy the next.
Learn the names of the winds, and the shortcuts locals never map.

“We didn’t buy a dream,” says Marije, tying a gate in the evening gold.
“We bought a set of problems we like solving, in a place that keeps us awake.”

The family’s ledger is part numbers, part uncountable things.
A fire that starts, a sky that opens, children who come home muddy and glad.

On a clear night the cottage sits like a small, bright thought.
Beyond it, two acres of quiet work and loud joy stretch toward the sea.

[1

post-2937","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-50
["GET
