A surprising situation, given the marked rise in global temperatures observed over the past decade.<\/p>\n<section class=\"incontent-related\"><span class=\"incontent-related__title\">Read also<\/span> <span class=\"incontent-related__desc\">In South America, the map of \u201catmospheric rivers\u201d sheds light on the origin of part of the precipitation<\/span><\/section>\n<p>If at the time this <em>anomaly<\/em> had been attributed to natural variations in ocean currents, scientists warned that it was probably only a temporary reprieve, with the melt rate likely to double in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>Relying on the latest available satellite data, the new study confirms this scenario. &#8220;<em>We were indeed facing a slowdown on a long-term downward trajectory<\/em>,&#8221; details Duo Chan of the University of Southampton.<\/p>\n<p>According to the team, by September 2025, the minimum annual Arctic sea ice extent was 5.8% lower than what had been recorded 12 months earlier, marking the steepest retreat ever observed over such a period since satellite records began in 1979.
