Researchers pulled two young lions from the frozen ground in Yakutia. Their whiskers and organs were intact. Thus, they appeared to come from the same litter. Yet, carbon-14 dating reveals a massive 15,000-year gap between their deaths.<\/p>\n

In 2017, a local mammoth-tusk hunter uncovered a first mummified body. The feline lay ten meters beneath the surface. Named Boris, this young male died about 43,000 years ago. His body rested in the permafrost of Yakutia.<\/p>\n

The following year, a second carcass emerged just fifteen meters from the first site. Scientists named this female Sparta. At their premature deaths, the two animals were the size of a domestic cat.<\/p>\n

Because of their close proximity, experts initially suspected a sibling relationship. However, carbon-14 analysis soon dismissed this possibility. Indeed, fifteen millennia separate the deaths of these two cubs.<\/p>\n

An exceptional level of preservation that illuminates the species\u2019 evolution<\/h2>\n

The condition of the female impressed Love Dal\u00e9n\u2019s team. Her carcass still preserves fur and whiskers. Consequently, this lioness who died 28,000 years ago becomes the best-preserved glacial animal ever found.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, scientist Valery Plotnikov notes intact internal organs within Sparta\u2019s body. Sparta sports a gray-brown coat, while Boris shows a lighter shade. This difference suggests a coat color adaptation with age.<\/p>\n

A deadly geological trap that buried two litters in the same place<\/h2>\n

X-ray examinations rule out the hypothesis of a predator attack. No bite marks appear on the bodies. Instead, the bones show damage caused by ground pressure.<\/p>\n

These clues indicate the site housed a den prone to collapses. Thus, two identical accidents occurred at distant times. The location became a 15,000-year-old trap site.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the study of the teeth reveals development accelerated relative to modern lions. This rapid growth helped the cubs survive the Siberian climate\u2019s extreme harshness. They would have needed to start consuming meat much earlier.<\/p>\n

Rare fossils confirming the value of ancient cave paintings<\/h2>\n

Until this discovery, the form of the cave lion relied mainly on prehistoric art. In France, the Chauvet Cave houses numerous depictions of the species. These new fossils finally confirm the accuracy of those ancient drawings.<\/p>\n

In total, researchers found only four cubs in this region of Yakutia. Yet, the rapid melting of the Siberian permafrost is accelerating today. Other remains of prehistoric animals could surface very soon.<\/p>\n
