In Brazil, a field experiment conducted in the heart of the Amazon reveals how a handful of black soil can transform tree growth and their microscopic world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Terra preta, an ancestral soil enriched by Amazonian human practices<\/h2>\n<p>At first glance, it appears to be an unusually dark soil. Yet <strong>terra preta<\/strong> is far more than a fertile ground. It results from practices developed by Amazonian Indigenous populations, who gradually enriched the soil with charcoal, organic residues, bones, and fragments of pottery.<\/p>\n<section class=\"incontent-related\"><span class=\"incontent-related__title\">Read also<\/span> <span class=\"incontent-related__desc\">Greenland melt and the collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC): scientists rule out the worst-case scenario<\/span><\/section>\n<p>This ancient blend stands in stark contrast to many tropical soils, often nutrient-poor despite the lush vegetation. The dark soil better retains carbon and the nutrients essential to plants. Most notably, it harbors an exceptional microbial community, capable of durably influencing root health and tree growth.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spectacular results in tree growth under natural conditions<\/h2>\n<p>To test this power outside the laboratory, Brazilian researchers carried out a field experiment between 2022 and 2023, with results published in the scientific journal <em><strong>BMC Ecology and Evolution<\/strong><\/em>. Young trees received a small amount of terra preta before being transplanted into ordinary Amazonian soil, under rain, wind and natural fluctuations.<\/p>\n<p>After six months, the differences were striking. The rosy ip\u00ea trees grown with this addition reached nearly 55% greater height. The previously observed greenhouse effect thus stood up to field conditions.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A transformed soil microbiome that promotes plant health and resilience<\/h2>\n<p>The surprise did not come solely from nutrients. Thanks to DNA sequencing of the samples, scientists found that terra preta remodelled the <strong>soil microbiome<\/strong>. It particularly altered the populations of fungi living in intimate contact with the roots, with a notably strong effect on the rosy ip\u00ea.<\/p>\n<p>Some potentially pathogenic communities receded, while beneficial microorganisms became more numerous. Terra preta sites hold relics of precolonial societies and constitute protected archaeological heritage in Brazil. Their excavation or transport would threaten centuries-old historical archives buried beneath the soil.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Towards Terra Preta-inspired biofertilizers to restore forests<\/h2>\n<p>The researchers\u2019 aim is therefore more subtle: identify the fungi, bacteria and other organisms responsible for the best results. These communities could be used to design forest bio-inoculants, applied in small quantities to young plants before they are installed in degraded lands.<\/p>\n<p>Such a method would not instantly cause a vanished forest to regrow. It could, however, increase the survival chances of plantations, speed their establishment and reduce costly interventions.
