Yet behind this reassuring backdrop lies a massive intervention: roughly 40% of its flow currently comes from artificial lakes. How long can these reserves hide the drought?<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An artificially sustained flow despite a historic decline in the river\u2019s level<\/h2>\n<p>At first glance, nothing alarming stands out. The sightseeing boats ply the water, the quays stay bustling, and the Seine continues on its calm course. Yet, on July 16, its discharge at Paris-Austerlitz reached only <strong>57.3 cubic meters per second<\/strong>, nearly three times lower than the historical July average.<\/p>\n<section class=\"incontent-related\"><span class=\"incontent-related__title\">Read also<\/span> <span class=\"incontent-related__desc\">Every night, billions of marine animals migrate in the darkness and slow down global warming<\/span><\/section>\n<p>The river remains above the crisis threshold, set around 45 cubic meters per second. But this level depends on substantial outside help. Each day, managers release about <strong>32 cubic meters per second<\/strong> from four large lake-reservoirs. Without these releases, the Seine would quickly breach the threshold, triggering restrictions and emergency measures.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reservoir-lakes designed to regulate winter floods and summer droughts<\/h2>\n<p>This system is not a product of the latest heatwaves. It dates back to the 1930s, after the severe drought of 1921 and a series of destructive floods. Engineers then conceived an ambitious solution: <strong>hold water in winter<\/strong> to limit floods, and return it in summer when rivers draw down.<\/p>\n<p>Four facilities now compose this giant reserve: Lake Der, Lake Orient, the Amance-Temple lakes, and Lake Panneci\u00e8re. Together they store up to <strong>808 million cubic meters of water<\/strong>. Canals, sluice gates, and mobile dams connect these lakes to the rivers. They regulate the Marne, the Aube, and the Yonne.<\/p>\n<section class=\"incontent-related\"><span class=\"incontent-related__title\">Read also<\/span> <span class=\"incontent-related__desc\">These flash droughts capable of drying an entire field in two to four weeks are spreading everywhere<\/span><\/section>\n<p>Their operation is akin to hydraulic lungs. When the basin receives a lot of water, they fill up. When drought takes hold, they slowly exhale their reserves. This quiet mechanism protects water supply, navigation, certain industrial activities and, above all, ecosystems, which depend on a <strong>permanent minimal flow<\/strong> to stay habitable.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A strained management amid an early heat wave and accelerating losses<\/h2>\n<p>In 2026, drawdown began as early as June 2, about a month sooner than usual. During the intense heat of late June, the releases even had to be doubled twice. The result: the reservoirs lose nearly <strong>3 million cubic meters per day<\/strong>, a pace that converts every dry week into a real countdown.<\/p>\n<p>Heat also acts as an invisible leak. On the Der lake, evaporation reaches about five cubic meters per second. The Orient and Amance-Temple lakes lose even more when added together. By July 1, 2026, the French Biodiversity Office recorded <strong>819 watercourses affected<\/strong> by flow interruptions or drying. A quarter of the sites observed faced difficulties. This marks an unprecedented level since the ONDE network began in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The Seine benefits from exceptional protection, but it is not unlimited. The four reservoirs remained around 80% full as of July 10, thanks to a mild winter. Managers remain confident for July and August. Yet the real challenge lies in <strong>preserving enough water until November<\/strong>, the usual period for the return of rains.<\/p>\n<p>This dependence reveals a reality that Paris has long downplayed. A river can appear robust while resting on infrastructure nearly a century old.
