Costa C\u00e1lida felt <strong>quieter<\/strong> \u2014 authentic towns from \u00c1guilas to Los Alc\u00e1zares, warm <strong>winters<\/strong>, the pale <strong>mirror<\/strong> of the Mar Menor. \u201cThere\u2019s a <strong>softness<\/strong> here,\u201d Declan says, \u201ca calmer sea, a <strong>friendlier<\/strong> pace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Cartagena is close for <strong>culture<\/strong> and clinics, Murcia city for <strong>bureaus<\/strong> and bigger shops, but daily life orbits the local <strong>plaza<\/strong>. \u201cWe wanted to walk to <strong>bread<\/strong>, to sit with the same <strong>faces<\/strong>, to know the fishmonger by <strong>name<\/strong>,\u201d Maeve says. A rented apartment near <strong>Mazarr\u00f3n<\/strong> ticked their boxes: morning light, a small <strong>balcony<\/strong>, and neighbours who talk with their <strong>hands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>The money math that changed everything<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Back in Tralee, \u201cwe tallied the <strong>bills<\/strong> like a second job,\u201d Maeve <strong>admits<\/strong>. In Spain, they track the same <strong>spreadsheet<\/strong>, but the rows feel <strong>lighter<\/strong>. Some costs shifted \u2014 more on <strong>fans<\/strong> in summer, less on <strong>heating<\/strong> in winter \u2014 yet the monthly sum lands with a softer <strong>thud<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul><\/p>\n<li>Rent in a modest seaside town; markets and groceries; utilities; internet and phones; health insurance top-up; bus fares and the odd hire car; caf\u00e9s and a few meals out: their combined <strong>pensions<\/strong> comfortably cover it all, with room for travel and <strong>guests<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<p>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not living <strong>flash<\/strong>,\u201d Declan says. \u201cBut we\u2019re living <strong>fully<\/strong> \u2014 fresh <strong>fish<\/strong>, a caf\u00e9 con leche without doing <strong>math<\/strong>, train trips to Valencia when the <strong>itch<\/strong> hits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>A day that doesn\u2019t race the clock<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Mornings belong to <strong>light<\/strong>. They walk the <strong>promenade<\/strong> at eight, when the air tastes like <strong>salt<\/strong> and the coffee smells like <strong>almonds<\/strong>. Breakfast is <strong>simple<\/strong>: tomatoes crushed on toast, olive <strong>oil<\/strong>, a sprinkle of sea <strong>salt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Afternoons are for the <strong>market<\/strong> or a local <strong>bus<\/strong> to explore a neighbouring <strong>village<\/strong>. Siesta isn\u2019t a rule, but the heat draws the <strong>curtains<\/strong>, and books open <strong>themselves<\/strong>. Nights stretch with <strong>laughter<\/strong>: a couple of <strong>tapas<\/strong>, murmured <strong>Spanish<\/strong>, the small clink of <strong>glasses<\/strong> at a street-side <strong>table<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Community, found rather than chased<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first, we drifted toward the <strong>expat<\/strong> bubble,\u201d Maeve says. \u201cIt\u2019s <strong>comforting<\/strong>, but we didn\u2019t come to be <strong>elsewhere<\/strong> behind glass.\u201d Now their week is threaded with a local <strong>choir<\/strong>, a beach clean, and a neighbour-led <strong>paella<\/strong> on Sundays.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>They joined a <strong>Spanish<\/strong> class that meets behind the <strong>library<\/strong>; every mispronounced \u201czumo\u201d earns a friendly <strong>groan<\/strong>. \u201cPeople appreciate the <strong>trying<\/strong>,\u201d Declan says. \u201cYou don\u2019t need perfect <strong>verbs<\/strong> to be a good <strong>neighbour<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Health, sun, and the long game<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The climate isn\u2019t only <strong>pleasant<\/strong>; it\u2019s <strong>practical<\/strong> for creaky <strong>knees<\/strong> and anxious <strong>minds<\/strong>. \u201cWe walk <strong>more<\/strong>, we sit <strong>less<\/strong>, and our shoulders feel <strong>lower<\/strong>,\u201d Maeve says. Good clinics are within a short <strong>drive<\/strong>, pharmacists know their <strong>faces<\/strong>, and checkups don\u2019t cost a <strong>fortune<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>They pace the <strong>summer<\/strong> with fans, early swims, and evening <strong>errands<\/strong>. \u201cYou learn the <strong>rhythm<\/strong>,\u201d Declan says. \u201cShade by <strong>noon<\/strong>, breeze by <strong>night<\/strong>, and water as your <strong>metronome<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>What they wish they\u2019d known earlier<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Bureaucracy loves <strong>paper<\/strong>, and sometimes three copies of the same <strong>paper<\/strong>. \u201cBring patience and extra <strong>staples<\/strong>,\u201d Maeve jokes. Appointments are best made with polite <strong>Spanish<\/strong> and a folder of <strong>proofs<\/strong> thicker than you <strong>think<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>They also advise renting before you <strong>buy<\/strong>, visiting in <strong>August<\/strong> and <strong>January<\/strong> to test the <strong>extremes<\/strong>. \u201cA place that charms in <strong>spring<\/strong> might roar in <strong>summer<\/strong>,\u201d Declan says. \u201cListen for <strong>nightlife<\/strong>, and ask about <strong>community<\/strong> fees before you say <strong>yes<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Staying rooted while roaming<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>They miss <strong>Kerry<\/strong> hedgerows and the first <strong>blackberries<\/strong> of late <strong>August<\/strong>, so they keep ties <strong>alive<\/strong>: calls on <strong>Sundays<\/strong>, a WhatsApp group for <strong>grandkids<\/strong>, and flights home via <strong>Cork<\/strong> or <strong>Shannon<\/strong> when fares make <strong>sense<\/strong>. Care parcels travel both <strong>ways<\/strong>: Barry\u2019s <strong>Tea<\/strong> out, tins of <strong>anchovies<\/strong> in.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t trade <strong>home<\/strong> for a brochure,\u201d Maeve says. \u201cWe built a second <strong>home<\/strong>, one that lets the <strong>days<\/strong> be sunny without erasing the <strong>rain<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>What \u201cvalue\u201d feels like, beyond numbers<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The real gain isn\u2019t just in the <strong>ledger<\/strong>.
