Traversing Africa, Europe, Alaska, and both poles, an invisible line recently identified bisects the Earth into two halves that reflect the same amount of light, with potential implications for mitigating global warming<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

East\u2013West Symmetry<\/h2>\n

Although it was long known that the northern and southern hemispheres possessed almost equal reflectivity, or albedo, Jianhao Zhang of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and his colleagues uncovered a second line of symmetry along the longitudes 27\u00b0 east and 153\u00b0 west. More than two decades of satellite data reveal albedo values\u2014under both clear skies and cloud cover\u2014as well as an ice-free ocean surface that are similar and stable for these two regions.<\/p>\n

\u00ab At first, we thought it was a coincidence. But the triple nature of this east\u2013west symmetry convinced us<\/em>, \u00bb explains Zhang. \u00ab Considering the variability and dynamism of clouds, these similarities are far from trivial<\/em>. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Intrigued by the noticeable yearly shift of the symmetry line, the team found that these fluctuations were tightly tied to changes in the Pacific Ocean surface temperatures tied to the El Ni\u00f1o\u2013Southern Oscillation (ENSO), one of the main drivers of global climate variability.<\/p>\n

\u00ab It\u2019s clearly not a geometric accident<\/em> \u00bb, the authors of the new study, published in the journal Nature<\/em>, write. \u00ab ENSO could act as a large-scale adjustment mechanism, helping to sustain east\u2013west symmetry at around 27 degrees east longitude<\/em>. \u00bb<\/p>\n

For \u00d8ivind Hodnebrog of the Oslo International Centre for Climate Research, this represents a robust planetary feature that could broadly influence weather patterns. \u00ab Unlike its north\u2013south counterpart, which appears to weaken as climate-change effects on sea ice and clouds intensify, the east\u2013west symmetry is currently stable<\/em> \u00bb, he notes.<\/p>\n

Pinpointing the mechanisms behind it could steer future solar geoengineering efforts, including studies aimed at boosting the albedo of one hemisphere, potentially balanced by a global feedback loop.<\/p>\n
