While the Greenland shark can live over 400 years, we now turn our attention to a parasitic mite whose life cycle, as rich as it is morbid, unfolds over just four days.

An Unusual Species

At first glance, the existence of male Adactylidium seems utterly futile: they do not appear to reproduce, and unlike the females, they do not feed on eggs of tiny flying insects, which implies they typically die shortly after birth.

Read also In the city, trees gain years of rapid growth but lose some of their durable ecological robustness

To clarify their life cycle and solve this biological mystery, researchers turned their attention to this genus of mites in 1966, with surprising discoveries in store.

The team found that the females attached to a single thrips egg, providing their food for the remainder of their short life. After about 84 hours, six to nine nymphs, including a single male, had formed inside their uterine cavity.

This animal ehn has the worst childbirth ever.
They are called Adactylidium and they do some really weird stuff with sex, babies, and sacrificing their moms.
The mommy mite lives on a tiny bug egg called a thrip for her whole life. When he escapes this fate and happens to see daylight, he dies quickly due to his inability to feed.

As for the reason behind such a scenario, scientists believe it is tied to the feeding habits of the Adactylidium females. A single thrips egg provides a limited nutrient source, so mating and in-utero cannibalism would help limit their energy expenditures.

Read also Forests rely not only on trees but also on vast underground fungal networks

To go further, discover these ten ways of being born that are as strange as they are fascinating in the animal kingdom.

[1
1533,1536,1534,1535,1532,200,1537
post-1306","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-cannibalism","tag-cycle","tag-death","tag-fourday","tag-inbreeding","tag-life","tag-mites","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-50
["GET
