On Saturday the 5th of October one of the biggest sales to be held at Balla with nearly 1200 head on offer and there was a great clearence. There was some good cattle in the yard and anything nice was selling well because of buyers from all over Ireland and the North. Farmers continue to sell out the cows with 170 strippers and 50 springers Bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged 2.08p/kg. There was a 380kg CHX born May '18 sold by a farmer from Barnacogue - Swinford at E955 at 2.51 p/kg. Store bullocks 400kg to 500kg were averaging 2.05 p/kg...the best sold by a farmer from Castlelucas - Claremorris who had a 475kg Char at E1200 or 2.53p/kg, While heavier bullocks 500kg + were exactly as last week and averaged E1.96 p/kg. A farmer from Carnaculla - Swinford with a lovely group of heavy cattle saw his 815kg CHX bullock make E1.580.00 euro or 1.94 p/kg..
There was 450+ heifers on offer and trade was brisk. Heifers up to 400 kg averaged 1.98 Euro p/kg. Heifers 400kg to 500kg were making E2.00p/kg with the weight. A 495kg LMX heifer sold by a farmer from Crimlin Ross - Castlebar for E1.160.00 or 2.34 p/kg. While 500kg averaged 1.92p/kg.. the best a heifer weighing 670kg heifer sold by a farmer from Dremderry - Ballyhaunis that made E1,425.00 or E755 with the weight.
This week there was a huge sale of cows. The best dry cow was a Lim animal born Mar '13 sold by a Liscarney - Westport farmer that weighed 790kg and made E1,535.00 euro. While in the springers there was a nice team of CHX cow 4 months gone with its heifer calf at foot sold by an Mace - Claremorris farmer at E1,800.00.
There was no sale of weanlings this week ...the weanling sale is on Tuesday the 8th of October...full report later.
