Associated Livestock Marts prepared to meet the Challenge but supports have to put in place for Farmers on the frontline.
Associated Livestock Marts received the announced made by Taoiseach Leo Vadakar yesterday Tuesday 24th March as a realistic approach to the countries fight against Covid 19 (Coronavirus), however concerned for farmers as they continue to supply the food into the food chain.
It is most important that we do everything possible to protect the public health while furthermore taking corrective action. This announcement which leads to the immediate closure of livestock marts which is to be reviewed on 19th April brings many challenges for the agricultural industry.
Marts have and will continue to play a major role in the food chain after Covid 19, however it is highly prudent that Minister Michael Creed shows leadership now more than ever by securing a financial support package, and the adaption of farm schemes to elevate concerns for farmers in this extremely difficult time. Farmers are and will continue to be the back bone of Ireland, for this momentous and courageous group of people financial support must be put in place with immediate effect while also encompassing tax reliefs regarding their inability to purchase stock at this time.
We as Mart Managers/Owners have worked closely with our farmer clients over generations we know the farming calendar like the back of our hand. We were welcoming the Spring trade into our rings, a time which seen many livestock traded especially cattle traded and an air of optimism amongst farmers. We will work with our farmers to broker deals facilitating procure of stock, ensuring a fair price is been achieved while ensuring all is been done in a professional and correct manner. Ireland, Europe and the World are adapting and meeting with a situation never know to us before at this scale. We all need to play our part in ensuring this Virus is taken control of. We the livestock marts have a proud tradition of been part of the community in our towns and villages in Ireland.
