Cattle slaughterings decreased by 17.4 per cent in SeptemberThe number of cattle slaughtered in September 2012 was 17.4% lower than in September 2011. See Table 1 and graph.
A further comparison of September 2012 and September 2011 slaughtering figures also shows that:
Sheep slaughterings increased by 7.4%.
Pig slaughterings decreased by 10.4%.
The number of cattle slaughtered in January-September 2012 was 13.0% lower than the corresponding 2011 period. Over the same period there was an increase of 7.5% in sheep slaughterings and an increase of 3.8% in pig slaughterings.
Comparing EU figures for the periods January-July 2012 and January-July 2011, Ireland showed a 12.9% decrease in cattle slaughterings while of the major EU cattle producing countries, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Germany recorded decreases of 7.7%, 4.2%, 3.7% and 0.2% respectively
